Willis Miller, Fayetteville

ARTIST WEBSITE:
Willis Miller is a signature member of Mid-Southern Watercolorists and Artists of Northwest Arkansas. His two dimensional artwork and sculptures are in collections from Beverly Hills to New York. His two dimensional work includes mediums of watercolor, acrylic and oil.

He says, “First of all I want to say that I am a Christian so I know whatever talent I have comes from the Lord. I believe art should express something about creation. It should motivate the observer to linger because of its extreme beauty, mystery, thought-provoking idea - or any combination of the three. Art should express feelings with a unique style. Art should also be structured on sophisticated design whether it is abstract or photo- realism.”

Willis Miller was born in Mississippi in the late 30’s but reared in Oklahoma City. Willis and his wife now reside in Fayetteville, AR nestled in the Ozark Mountains.  After graduating from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Forestry, he spent the majority of his working life employed by Georgia-Pacific. His job fit well with his love of the outdoors.

At the age of 40 he was led to begin painting. His first teacher was very instrumental in guiding him into the world of art. Her name was Janice Clark. Although he did not know her at the time, she observed some of his work in a frame shop. She told the storeowner, “If he does not think he knows it all, I would like to teach him.” From that point on she began instructing him without charge. Around that time Janice was featured in a book entitled, “A Fine Age - Creativity As A Key To Successful Aging.” Now Willis wants to share the wonder of God like Janice shared with him. It is not about fame and money it is to bring Glory to God. In that endeavor he wants to share in any way the Lord leads him. He emphasizes that he does not want his art to become an idol. He said, “Look at the vastness of His creation, from the Heavens to the tiniest of His creatures. One day I was looking at some insect books and I was just in awe of God’s creative nature just in his insects. Have you ever looked at the design in the structure of a dragonfly’s wing or the color and creativity in His Rainbow Grasshopper? Our Lord created an amazing Universe.” He goes on to say, “There is an even better eternal time and place to come by His grace. I hope I meet a lot of God’s children here in our journey and that we see each other again in our wonderful eternal home.”
